guardian angel. The existence of true spiritual guardian angels may be debatable but what cannot be debated is the guardian angel spirit that exists in each of us.
Personally, I have not had a significant event in which a guardian angel presented itself. However, the two people that I am closest have each experienced such events. When my wife was a young girl, she had an unfortunate skateboarding accident. Although Throughout the years, we have all heard intriguing heartfelt stories in the media that tag a person as her father was home, he was suffering from a horrible flu bug and was unaware the accident had taken place – especially since it was a couple of blocks from the house.
She had broken her leg in multiple places which included a compound fracture. Immediately following the accident, a teenage boy appeared. Without hesitation, this young man picked her up and instantly began running her home to her father. Needless to say, her father rushed her to the hospital where she obtained emergency treatment. Although her father may have been delirious from the fever of his own illness, he did state that he had never seen the boy who brought his injured daughter home. In addition, where was he that allowed him to get to her so quickly? How did he know which home was hers? Why would no one in the neighborhood know of the boy when asked of a teenage boy in blue jeans, a white t-shirt, and long curly hair? Was he a guardian angel?
As a teenager, my brother was involved in a horrific youth group bus accident. The brakes apparently failed on the bus as it was returning from a snow trip. The bus flipped several times resulting in casualties and many injuries. Although my brother did not perish, it was stated by the authorities that his survival was the direct result of one individual.
The accident occurred during a dark cold winter night on a southern California mountain. The remote location meant that there were no emergency resources within close proximity. In addition, during the 1970s cell phones were not readily available and the nearest telephone to the crash site was approximately 30 minutes away.
My brother was severely injured. Whether he was thrown from the bus or bounced around inside remains somewhat of a mystery to me – it is an event that still remains too painful for all to discuss in details. Nonetheless, immediately following the accident he was in a broken state. His knees and body were broken or bruised. However, the trauma to his head is what put his life in true jeopardy. His head was split open from hairline to neck. With first responder’s inability to arrive at the scene for almost 2 hours, he would have probably perished – if not for one person.
This person found my brother and for hours with all their might held his head together until help arrived. This person (along with others) appeared out of the darkness and held the children until help arrived. In doing so; they saved many lives. We never met this person. My brother maintains a faint image of this woman, but that is all. Who was this individual? Where did she come from? How did she maintain the strength? Was she a guardian angel?
Were these guardian angels? I would argue, yes. Maybe not in a biblical sense but they are an example that even a random individual given the opportunity can quickly become a guardian angel. These two individuals disappeared as quickly as they appeared. They were not looking for praise or to be defined as a hero. They witnessed a person in need and without hesitation (and possibly regard for their own safety) acted quickly to help. They illustrated that the guardian angel spirit truly exists in each of us.

Husband, father, coffee connoisseur and lover of all things hockey. At 51 I sometimes wonder have I done enough. I have been married to my best friend for 30 years. She knows all my faults and loves me anyway, As a father of “almost always” perfect boys, I am always surprised at what life has to offer. It is messy, scary, thrilling, and always fun.
